What is advocacy?

A dictionary states:

It is the act of pleading for, supporting or recommending.

Therefore a nurse advocate is a nurse who pleads for, on the behalf of a patient or the family of a patient, supports a cause and recommends appropriate actions, services and care of the patient.  The nurse is the voice of the patient.

As advocates, nurses have helped vulnerable patients and their loved ones map out and follow a treatment course consistent with the patients' values.
